I know, I know.

I think North America was the only place they were called Miatas. Everywhere 
else they were always MX-5s (which latest gens are now called here).

And first generation Miatas were called girl cars here. Pretty cramped for the 
average North American male and underpowered they were derided by power-hungry 
macho types.

Otoh Road &Track said it had perfectly balanced power and handling with the 
best shifter ever on a road car.

Don't care what anyone else said, it was the Japanese perfecting the classic 
British sports car.
