I asked a ranger what kind of minerals we were looking at, and told him I 
suspected the tuquoise to contain a lot of copper. He could not confirm but 
told me the purple stuff was manganese. According to Wikipedia, the green 
stuff is mica, but that's a family of minerals that can have a lot of 
different metallic "contaminants".
