Yes, Paul, that's how it works.

Now, I can have several different profiles saved (e.g. for different
conditions). What I am looking for is how I can load a different 
saved profile without redoing that profile from scratch.

If the software is like the Datacolor Spyder software, you calibrate the 
monitor, save the icc profile and the calibration software sets the 
profile to load when you start Windows.  You do this each time you 
calibrate your monitor.  If you don't save the profile your display 
reverts to what it was prior to calibration.  At the end of the 
calibration sequence the Spyder software allows you toggle between 
calibrated and uncalibrated so you can see the difference.
