I like to recommend Photo Design by Harald Mante, although I suspect it's difficult to get hold of a copy now. It's a very pure and simple guide, on the 'show not tell' basis to visual design, in black and white. A beautiful book in its own right, and very instructive. He has published several books since, some of which include material from this, and I think I have all his books, but none of them is a patch on the original. I'd rank it in my top 5 instructional photo books.
