Not so non-trivial and laborious, Boris. Here's my layer stack, from the bottom:
copy of the original with 30px gaussian blur; curves adjustment to brighten that; the original, blending mode set to Soft Light; copy of the original High-Pass'ed at 1px, blending mode set to overlay. I think the result works very well.
