Julia, Many fine books have been written about the art of portrait photography. You might want to check your local camera store. Also, EBay has a section devoted to books on photography.
Last year, for a few months, PDML had the privilege of mentoring Tanya, a 26-year-old Australian mother who was just getting into photography, with an emphasis on shooting people in natural settings.
