Bill and John,

First, as somebody already wrote in this thread, one should distinguish
between the "enterprise" and "consumer" levels of the laptops.
There is usually a clear difference in the quality as well as the build
quality, and is typically reflected in the price.

As for the brands, I have very good opinion about Fujitsu.
I've had their Lifebook "P"-series laptops for the last 10 years, and
those traveled around the world, and I am happy with them.

For the last 3.5 years, my wife has been using Toshiba Portege-s. They are
good in the overall quality, and would seriously considerit as my next
one, even though the the first of the Portege developed a contact
problem inside the hinge. But it might be because our toddler daughter
has managed to get to that laptop... I don't remember for sure.
Toshiba Sattelite is the "consumer" line. We bought one for my in-laws.
They are not as good as the Portege (and considerably havier), but seem
to be OK for simple tasks (web-surfing, e-mail, Skype).

A good collection of "solid" laptop models is presented here:
http://www.portableone.com/
I bought my first Fujitsu laptop through them, but then they stopped
being distributors for Fujitsu. They are also good at customizing your
laptop configuration beyond what is offered by the manufacturer.

Igor

That was my next question.
I only have two criteria that must be met.
It must be Windows 7, and it must not be Lenovo.
