Thanks Alan and Bob for the comments.  You're starting to see why I want to 
live down there :)

The water in that lake is crystal clear and a real pleasure to swim in but a 
little chilly.  There's a rather brave swimming club who regularly swim in the 
lake year-round.  It's the second-best swimming spot I've encountered, after 
Emily Bay on Norfolk Island.

I'd also like to try rowing but would probably tip out of a race boat.  Closest 
I've come is using a rowing machine at the gym (usually as a warmup before a 
strength routine).  I think I'd prefer kayaking because you can see where 
you're going!

BTW I don't think they race on Lake Wanaka.  The big racing venue in the South 
Island is on Lake Ruataniwha which is close to Twizel.
