Thanks for looking and commenting, Jack and John.

The subject is an older gentleman who was part of a tour group, quite
probably from a cruise ship docked nearby at Kahului. The Item
hanging from his neck is an identification card that marks him as part
of the group. Most of his group appeared to be Japanese tourists.

The footbridge seen behind his crossed Iao Stream, which is quite a
distance below. Later in the day there are often young locals diving
from the bridge into a tiny pool of water that is deeper than most of
the stream. It looks very dangerous, and one must be very familiar
with the stream to avoid the rocks and shallow areas.

The ground falls off very steeply beyond and to the left of the
warning sigh. There are two separate sets of steps. with guard rails,
one on either side of the bridge, allowing access to the display area
and hiking trails in the valley. The area on the near side is planted
solely with native Hawaiian vegetation, and also has a bamboo hale or
hut and a few taro patches. This area is protected, and signs direct
visitors to stay on the paved pathways. There are trails in the
valley for short and longer hikes, however, and in those areas, one
explore more freely, including pools where one can take a cooling dip.

Iao Valley State Park in on the rainy side of the island, just a short
distance from Puʻu Kukui, one of the wettest spots on Earth, receiving
an average of 386.5 inches of rain a year. As a result, the park
contains lush vegetation usually found only in less accessible parts
of Maui.
