John, you're quite right. I followed it up - Gumtree SA (like Gumtree Aus)
belongs to eBay. I only became aware of the connection the other day when I
read in the local press that Gumtree was "owned" by PayPal. They obviously
didn't have their facts quite right. Gumtree doesn't have all the buyer
protections of eBay but if you pay using PayPal then some type of redress is
still possible.

eBay owns PayPal (and is resisting attempts by a corporate raider
