we had a strangely similar experience here in Denver several years ago; i heard loud calls and discovered a white cockatiel perched in a large crabapple tree in our yard; it seemed to be sticking around, so i tried to put the word out and see if i could get some help catching it; while i was on the phone, standing under the tree, a falcon or hawk dive-bombed the cockatiel, loosing a few feathers but mainly startling it; the cockatiel flew down the block out of sight, and though i tried to track it i never saw it again

raptors (usually sharp-shinned hawks) hunt and eat smaller birds in our yard fairly often, and sometimes i have been within spitting distance when it happened, but the cockatiel was the strangest of all these incidents
