Thanks for the update, Ryan. As a quick aside, Last week I made a round trip
between Portland, Oregon and Ontario, California (east of LA).

Security in Portland did a swab test on my gear bag (containing several
lenses, ZX-M body and accessories) after being x-ray'd. I purchased all my
film in California, and I had several rolls left on the return trip.
Security at Ontario Airport did honor my request for a hand check for the
film, although the request went up the flag pole until it got to the
supervising coordinated directing manager-in-charge, who said, "Look, all
you need to do is open the bag, look at each roll and make sure there's film
there". The rolls were out of their boxes and cans, each with a leader
sticking out and in a clear zip-loc bag.
