When our own Tim Bray offered his Sigma EX 30mm f1.4 my first thought
was that I didn't need it, given that I had the Sigma EX 28mm f1.8.
But then it dawned on me that I might be able to "upgrade" to the
faster f1.4 for essentially free. So I quickly sold my 28 and bought
Tim's 30. (Thanks Tim!)

This is the original version of the Sigma EX 30mm f1.4. It does not
have the AF/MF switch as the current(?) model does. It also lacks HSM,
but I did not notice the focusing as being overly noisy. The 30mm
lacks the 28mm's "macro" capabilities, but I decided I have lots of
other macro and close-up options, so don't think I'll miss that. In
exchange I get a lens that is MUCH smaller and lighter than the EX
28mm f1.8, which had a 77mm filter size. This 30mm has a 62mm filter
size. This will be my new "normal" prime and will also take over for
the 28mm f1.8 in the aurora and meteor shower department.

Anyway, making some of my first images with the lens, I grabbed a
quick shot of one of our workers on the assembly floor here at work.
He's an interesting looking fellow. In contrast to the title, this
image is in B&W (Soft Sepia) which I really like. For comparion, I
will also share the shot in the original color version.

Comments and criticism welcome. (I will say that it is unfortunate
that the shop lights reflected in his glasses cut right across his
eye, but it was a quick grab shot to get a natural expression before
he could react to the camera being pointed at him.)
