That would be my advice!  To be honest I can't even true them.  I think I've 
only ever needed that done a couple of times and I took them into the shop.

My brother-in-law worked as a bike mechanic for a while so for anything harder 
than the basics I just let him take care of it.  Then he moved down south so I 
have to cope by myself...

I've found the guides on the Park Tools website to be very useful.  One was 
useful in convincing me that what I wanted to do was far too risky for me to 
attempt myself :)
