I appreciate your opinion, John. The background is a blessing and curse. It's some kind of large vintage poster or advertising board that is hung directly behind Kat's booth and partially covering a large west-facing window that the afternoon sun was striking full on. So there are little spotlights of light streaming in through numerous holes in it as well as light from around the edges of it. I centered Kat in it to provide backlight but it also created a ton of veiling flare that softened the overall image as well. Some of the light bounced off the inside of the lens hood and created white vignetting around the lower corners.
I think the shot was only really possible at all because of the SMC coatings, but I'll have to try one of my uncoated m42 lenses in the same conditions sometime.
