The ME S is, IMO, a great camera. I liken it to the Spotmatic of the M-series. I think it's so cheap because so many of them were made.
While the controls are, for me, a bit odd, in that one must push a couple of small buttons in order to change the shutter speed, every thing else about the camera seems ideal or close to it. The MX is more expensive because there are fewer of them around, and because they are considered more "professional" than the ME series cameras.
