I take it I could move all my LR off the machine external hard disks. The question then is what do I do when I’m away from home and don’t have access to the hard drives.
what i do (with Aperture) is locate the image files for my older catalogs (arranged by year) on a server drive, and my more recent files on my laptop; the catalogs are all still on the laptop, so i can still search and see a moderate-res version of older images when i am away from home; when i am home, a Gig-ethernet connection makes loading the old images pretty fast; i assume LightRoom can do the same
I’ve paid for 60GB of SugarSync cloud storage which I have yet to use. Is the cloud good as the primary place to store image files or only backups?
i wouldn't use it as primary; it will be limited to your internet speed for loading images, and if you store your metadata in the files or XMP sidecars, you won't be able to update them directly
i would use an external hard drive or home server for primary storage (of what doesn't fit your laptop), and also have another backup under your physical control; i find cloud storage best for secondary backups and for sharing
if you really want to backup lots of photos in the cloud, consider your options; just for example (there may be better choices), a free Flickr account gives you 1TB of storage, but limits you to JPEG or PNG; Google+ supports DNG and gives you 15GB free — i suspect both of these have a more photo-oriented interface than SugarSync, including plug-ins to upload directly (i couldn't find such a plug-in for SugarSync)
