that's right; the two workarounds i've used are
1) server-side filtering - only available from some email services (e.g.
Fastmail, Apple iCloud, Gmail)
2) leave an email client running on a home machine that has filters defined;
99.9% of the time the home filters will move the email into the correct mailbox
before you look for it on the phone
there are also some iOS apps that include filtering, but i've not tried them
