Alan, there are a few ways to reduce haze in landscape shots, though there are tradeoffs.
Eg: if you are using Lightroom the Clarity slider or adjustment brush can work wonders. Nik, Topaz Labs and onOne plugins have even better "clarity" filters. If you don't have those but are using PSE or The Gimp you can play with the settings in the Unsharp Mask to get a similar effect. If you have Photoshop (and maybe PSE or The Gimp) you can play some games with making a black&white clone of your image and setting its mode to overlay. You can selectively apply contrast boosts to various tones that are affected by the haze while leaving others alone. This avoids too much sharpening if that's bothering you. Shift the Opacity slider to control the amount of the contrast effect.
