Thank you, Jack, Bob and Attila for the comments and suggestions.
As for them not being vertical, - at the time of working on the images,
I discovered that, even though I think I made sure my camera was
actually vertical. Since all of them were at an angle, I suspect
either I tilted the camera, or it was the effect of the wind
(it was windy that evening).
While it was easy to correct, I made an executive decision that
it was windy, and left it as is.

Sorry, I don't know the species.
I realized that for all my flower/plant shots I made that evening
at the Finnerty Gardens, I should've taken shots of the labels.

There is a "self-guided walk tour":
http://www.uvic.ca/finnerty/assets/docs/FinnertyGardensWalkingTour.pdf
but I am too lazy to google each of those plants to match to the images.

I know that different people see bokeh from highlights differently, but
it is still interesting, that Bob and Attila had directly opposite
impression of those in this photo. :-)

Below is an additional comment to Attila's suggestion.

I actually tried a few other shots, and this angle seems to be giving
the most interesting light.
When I tried to zoom in ("macro"), as you suggested, the light effect
was not as apparent.
