Thanks for looking Jack and Attila. It is a prickly pear cactus up close. Those points are soft (in both senses of the word) now, but after the flowers finish blooming and fall off they will become razor sharp. I have accidentally gotten a few of the spines in my skin from time to time, and they are very irritating and hard to remove.
The prickly pears always bear profuse yellow blossoms every June for fathers day. They are one of the few plants that thrive in my area and are completely deer-proof. <G> Yes, I know that the rear spines are soft. I shot this at f20, but I was in quite close, so only the spine that I focused on is as sharp as possible. Actually, I think I prefer it that way; it adds a sense of unreality to the image.
