I've never had exactly that experience with a camera, but I've had
massive discharges from batteries when a dead short developed in a
circuit. I'd be wary of any device that did that once. Those types of
problems seldom fix themselves.

Now, with a new battery it's working OK again and the other battery
appears to be charging normally.
