If you're shooting raw awb is as good as any setting, white balance only really effects the jpeg output of the camera anyway. You can change the white balance in whatever raw converter you're using. Now there is some improvement in the histogram display, since it comes from the jpeg engine, if the white balance matches closely to the environment. However I pretty sure in most situations awd will do a better job in most mixed lighting situations.

Hi Ken: has this reading been specifically about the K-3 or just AWB in
general? Cheers, Christine

I've been reading that using AWB should be avoided, as in general it produces
inconsistent results. It's been recommended to select a specific applicable WB
(cloudy, sunny etc what ever is applicable) that will at least be consistent
thru the shoot. Unless of course you set a custom WB.

Thanks for the heads up, Bruce. I’m eager to see what the AWB improvements
will bring. My first and limited impressions so far on the K-3 is that the AWB
is sometimes a bit inconsistent. My thought is the K5 AWB was more stable and
consistent.
