I'm not sure why it bothers you. It may not be my or your "cup 'o tea" but it is a way to put the company in the headlines. If they were smart they would never announce two (or more) new products on the same day. Then each product announcement would give content-starved news and photography sites/blogs something to write about more days of the year.
This (limited runs of some sort of cosmetically-different camera) has been done regularly for a while, particularly with flagship products. By all accounts, the K-3 deserves the extra attention.
