Thanks (again) Ann, Alan and Bob.. Alan, it seems like decades since I first started noticing workshops advertised in Outdoor Photography etc. Last year I finally took my first one - the same venue/instructors/teaching points as the one I just completed. I made the reservation, then also signed up for a one-day seminar, March 2013, with the same people; no field work, just lecture and questions. I decided that they did have something to say and so I did not request a refund on my workshop deposit. At the first workshop, Aug 2013, I was exposed to many approaches I had heard of but never practiced. I signed up for their fall workshop (same general venue, more focus on landscape than on macro). Thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Went back for my recent Aug 2014 workshop. No regrets.
1. It is great to hear about stuff like focus stacking, then to try it out, get feedback, get assistance as needed, then try it again. 2. Going back for the 2nd August, I was still learning but definitely starting from a much better starting point in terms of my technique. Less fiddling around, more attention to the subjects. 3. A wonderful aspect of the workshop is finding subjects to shoot. With 15 people (including two experienced instructors), it doesn’t take long to spot and mark interesting flowers, insects, spider webs etc. (It doesn’t hurt that the instructors know the area thoroughly; which dewy meadow we go to on a given morning depends on cloud cover, wind speed and direction etc., the choice of location designed to maximize our shooting opportunities.) And part of the instruction is on how to look, where to look. The frogs in my gallery are about the size of my thumbnail; they’ll never be large, but are now barely beyond tadpole stage. Not something I would know to look for on my own. 4. Some in this group have universities or colleges or camera clubs that arrange instruction locally. I would love to have that opportunity as well. As you can tell, I am a proponent for these sort of workshops. If you ever do get the chance, do it! stan On Aug 17, 2014, at 2:28 PM, Alan C <[email protected]> wrote: > Many fine images there, Stan.
