yeah i was using network email in 1978 too (mixed Unix & TOPS-20 environment), and it had clearly been around long before that

while any email of mine that escaped the university environment went by UUCP, others (grad students and profs) were transmitting via ARPAnet, and i would see such addresses on some emails forwarded to me
