Ken - The roads were paved all the way as I recall. I misread my handwriting though, I see now it was Sturgeon Falls we stayed in.

I was very disappointed in Sault St. Marie because as a child I had
been fascinated with it and was eager to show it to Richard.

Be interesting to se Stan's report.

Hehe - Ken - so things haven't changed that much since 1989 I guess
This, from my journal on 10/15/89

Sturges Falls, Ontario - Moulin Rouge Motel $45.00 .
"A grubby little Canook town, but our hostest is sweet as are her kids.
Woke to heavy fog this ama nd glad we got to Mackinac yesterday. The
road between st. Ignacius and Sault St Marie is flat but nicely wooded.
Salut St MArie (both on the American and Canadian side) is dismal and
ulgy. In fact, witht he slate skies we had all day there was very
little that was pretty between Sault St. Marie and here. .. Even the
forest looked unhappy. "

Stan,
I'd recommend doing the stretch from the Sault to Wawa in the early part
of the day, since there aren't many accomodations I'd recommend in
between.

Thanks for the suggestion Ken. I’ve seen circle-tour brochures but
didn’t have a good sense of how long a trip it might be, or how
interesting it might be photographically. Depending on the weather when
we get to the Soo, we might just turn right and go around. If not then,
it will definitely be on my list of things to do later.

Stan, what I'm about to suggest is a little out of your intended path
but since you're going through the Sault, you might want to consider a
counter clockwise circum navigation of Lake Superior.

Starting at the Sault and going north and west around Superior, the
highways mostly border on the lake's shoreline with numerous parks
along the way. Alot of the shoreline has a "Maine" feel to it.
Continuing around the top of Superior into Minnesota, Wisconsin and
back into Michigan's Upper Peninsula at the western most point. A
leisurely trip of 3 - 4 days with lots of photographic opportunities.
I've done it several times and have always enjoyed it. Can be done in
less time depending on your stops.

Thanks Paul, Sandy, Steve, Ann, Dve and Dave!

Paul, the train tour does look interesting. We would be in that
neighborhood on 14-15 September, just at the front end of the Fall
Colours season. A definite possibility.
Sandy, thanks for the link and the comments on Georgian Bay. And also
Dve and Steve for the Cornwall/Kingston suggestion. I had considered
going east around Lake Ontario, i.e. via Kingston area and then WNW to
SSM. I’ve spent time in and around Kingston (attended a couple of
week-long conference/meetings at the military college there) and am
somewhat familiar with both the U.S. and Canadian sides of that
region. But Meg wanted Huron lakeshore, so we’ll go west around
Toronto and then north…
Sandy and Ann, I am also somewhat familiar with Sault Set. Marie, on
the U.S. side. The locks are worth a visit but otherwise I would agree
that it is probably not a destination in and of itself. But it is the
only crossing into the U.S. from Ontario without dropping back down to
Sarnia/Port Huron.
Dave, I am glad to see that Ontario will reopen on Sept 9 - we’ll be
passing through to NY on the 11th, back west on the 13-14th so that
works out. ;-)

So far my Ontario experience has been 3-4 trips back-and-forth between
Sarnia and Niagara, my time in the Kingston area, a few days in
Ottawa, 2-3 trips to Toronto. So, no exposure to the countryside
beyond the southern farming region. A fellow participant at my recent
photo workshop is from Kitchner, he spoke of a park a few hours north
where he went for scenic and wildlife shots. I did not pay much
attention to details as I did not have this trip planned, and I don’t
have his contact information to follow up with him. So part of my
poking around has been to see if I can figure out where he was
referring to. It could have been the Georgian Bay region.

If you have some time when you get to the Soo, the trip to Agawa

train drops you at the canyon for a couple hour layover, then the
southbound picks you up and takes you back.

Apologies for the slightly provocative Subject.

In a couple of weeks we planned to go to the family cabin near
Traverse City Michigan. Then I got a (late) notice that my high
school class was celebrating our 53rd anniversary with a picnic. So,
we will go east to central New York for the picnic and family
visits, then back through Ontario and around Lake Huron, re-entering
the States via Sault Set. Marie. Probably spend two days between our
first overnight in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the time we cross back at
the Soo and head for the Traverse City area.

I have never seen any of that country (except for the greater
Toronto metro area which I think we need to traverse) and would
welcome suggestions for must-see scenic spots. So far I am intrigued
by Perry Sound, a provincial park at the north end of Georgian Bay,
and Kagawong. But I have just been randomly poking around - any
suggestions would be most appreciated.
