Sadly I agree with Cotty, the FF camera will be Ricoh branded,
mirrorless with a newly developed lens mount similar to and electrically
compatible with the KFA mount, and an adapter that will allow all K
mount lenses to be used at the proper register distance. The adapter
will come in two versions, an auto focus adapter module with a motor to
drive screw driven lenses, and one that simply passes through power for
lenses with built in motors. Both adapters will have also have
provision to actuate the the stopdown lever in K mount lenses, of all
vintages as the new camera will have only electrical contacts to control
those motors in the new R mount lenses. For purest it will include an
aperture simulator that will translate the f stop of the adapted lens to
electrical data for the camera's metering system.
This of course has the potential to both please and annoy everyone.
Those who keep demanding a clean break will get a mirrorless camera much
like a Sony A7, but they will be unaccountably annoyed by the mere
existence of a module that makes all K mount lenses fully compatible.
Purists will get full use of their beloved Pentax lenses, but will
dislike the fact that the camera will have an EVF and not be a DSLR, no
matter how good the EVF might be.
Pentax will make a slight nod to Retro, much as the K-7/5/3 has styling
cues from the Super Program and LX Cameras, but won't go full retro,
which will annoy those who really literally want a Digital LX.
I'll stand by that prediction until it's proven wrong.
Unfortunately it will let Cotty off on a technicality, and I'll have to
eat that Liquid Stoopid Sauce I've saved for his hat myself.
