I reinstalled the OS. It seems a recovery partition was not created. At least 
when I do command-R after running disk utility, verifying the disk, and finding 
that the disk is corrupt, I get the same result as before: A finder window 
opens and nothing else happens. I held command-R down for at least a minute and 
a half. Could it be that that is not long enough?
