Thanks, David. The OE-1 was used for observation, reconnaissance, and (especially in the Marine Corps) forward air control and forward artillery control. Some of the missions I flew in Viet Nam were coordinated by OE-1s.
As for the C-17s, they are indeed impressive aircraft. They are based at McGuire AFB not too far from where we live, and I have seen them frequently, especially when my great niece comes down for soccer tournaments held on the base. The daughter of USAF captain flying C-17s out of McGuire, mostly to Europe and the Middle East.
