Great photo essay, Tim! About 15 years ago, we walked down to the lava area of Kilauea just before sunset. It was a memorable experience, even though I did not get close enough to poke a stick into the molten lava.
The last few times we have been there, however, we were not able to get that close. Because of the wind direction and location of the active flows, the park rangers had blocked off the access. It is almost impossible to tell i advance how close one can get to the flow. I think that flying over the flow in a small plane would be a good alternative, and offer a different viewpoint than I have had before. Besides, this way I will only be away from Maui for a few hours. <G> Dan Matyola http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola On Thu, Oct 2, 2014 at 8:41 PM, Tim Bray <[email protected]> wrote: > If you’re reasonably fit, you can walk to the lava and poke a stick in > it: > https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/201x/2013/03/26/Finite-Integral-of-the-Earth > > On Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 8:06 AM, Alan C <[email protected]> wrote: >> "When we go to Maui again this winter, I plan to fly over to the Big >> Island in a small private plane to watch (and photograph) the lava >> flowing into the sea at sunset" >> >> Now that should be something.
