Hi Rachel; Depending on the macro subjects you intend to shoot, a ring flash may not be the answer. I use an LX with an AF280T flash mounted off camera above and to the side of the subject to add shadow and get some feeling of depth. Ringflashes tend to give very flat even lighting which is great for 2 dimensional subjects but loses depth with 3D subjects like bugs and other small animals. Look at http://photography.skofteland.net/macro.htm to see what I mean about adding depth to a 3D subject. You can also see more at http://photography.skofteland.net/insects/index.htm almost all were taken with a single flash unit.
There are some really good books out there about close-up photography. Do a search on Amazon.com and buy or borrow one or two (I reccommend John Shaw's Closeups in Nature if you are interested in that subject matter).
