FWIW - I upgraded my home wi-fi router a couple years ago and the Netgear model I purchased has a built in USB port and a simplified sharing mode. Any USB drive could plug in to the router and connect to the network. I used it briefly when we were living in temporary quarters and I did not have a desk to hold the USB drive where I was storing photos. It worked fine, though it was slower than being directly connected to the drive.

Do you know of any enclosures or drives—preferably with swappable drives—with wifi connectivity?

any NAS (Network Attached Storage) unit is wifi accessible if you connect it by Ethernet to a wifi router; however wifi is usually much slower than Ethernet or USB 3 for the large file transfers implicit in bulk photo storage
