That's a slippery slope you're starting down!

Almost 20 years ago (is it really that long?) I had a PZ-1p with the
FA 28-105/f4.0-5.6 and the FA 100-300, and I too felt that the 100-300
was a little soft at the long end (although I got some pretty good shots
with it!).

My first mistake was to try an A* lens - the 200/2.8. The difference
between that and the 100-300 was all too easy to see, unfortunately.
Over the years since then I've picked up some pretty good lenses on the
used market: a FA* 80-200/2.8, an A* 300/2.8, and I was even lucky enough
to come across an affordable example of the the superb FA* 250-600/f5.6.
(I no longer have the A* 200/2.8, but it went to a good home with another
local PDML member).

Nowadays I mostly use the DA* zooms (the 16-50 and 60-250 are in the kit
I start with, backed up by the 250-600 if I know I'll need more reach).

I also accquired an FA 80-320 in a three-way trade (I had an M 80-200/f4
I bought back in 1978 and which I was no longer using; I traded that to
somebody who wanted that lens, and was offering in exchange a lens which
in turn was wanted by somebody with the 80-320). While it's not as good
as the star lenses, I'd consider it to be an upgrade for the 100-300 if
you want to keep to anything like a reasonable budget ...
