I have a relatively new Manfrotto 055CX3 tripod.

1. Minor issue. Short question: Is there a way to adjust the tension on the swivel
at the top of the legs? I.e., to adjust the force needed to open & close the
legs from stored to deployed position?
Background: When I carry it with legs partially extended, holding the
tripod roughly horizontal to the ground, one of the legs is loose enough that
it will open up under its own weight. My hand is big enough to hold two of the
legs at once but I can’t wrap my hand around all three. So when this happens I
need to reorient so that the looser leg is one of the two I am using to
hold/carry the tripod. A nuisance.

2. Apart from the obvious issues of keeping sand and dust from getting into the
joints, is there anything I could/should do to ensure a long working life for
the tripod?

I haven't looked at an 055 for quite a while, and the one I had was purchased in the 1980s, so this might be useless, in which case treat it like everything else I post but..

Presuming they are the lever style of locks, there is an adjuster nut opposite the lever that can be tightened or loosened with an Allen Key (that was supplied with my tripod). The adjustment on mine was nearly impossible to get right, but the procedure was to open the lock, tighten the adjuster very slightly, and then make sure that the leg would still slide, and that the lever would still operate. Repeat until you get it as good as possible. On my 055, one leg would not adjust in such a way that it worked properly, and in order to have the adjuster loose enough to allow the leg to telescope when unlocked, the leg would collapse very slowly under the weight of my Pentax 6x7. I ended up replacing the offending lever and all was well. Apparently the cam on the original one wasn't deep enough.
