I replaced my FA 100-300 with the 55-300 WR over the summer and have
been very happy with the results.

Yes, I agree. I'm saving for one to replace my FA 100-300mm.

Jack Davis has gotten some excellent results shooting birds with the 50-300.

I'm still looking for a tele lens for my K-3. Seems like my trusted
old Pentacon 4/300 mm has become heavier over the years and it's
optical quality is no longer as good with the K-3's 24 MPix sensor
as it was with my previous cameras. Looks like we're both getting
old...
Something around 300 mm would be nice but the 1000 euros for the DA
4/300 are a lot of money for a lens that I won't be using that
often.
Is the 50 - 300 mm sensibly better between 50 and 200 than the 50 -
200 kit lens and how good is it at the long end?
Any other suggestions?
