No. The locals still living in the traditional way in rural areas make alcoholic drinks from a variety of fruits but it is a dying art. However, Marula beer made from the fruit of the Marula tree has become very popular. Phalaborwa is the epicentre of the annual week long Marula Festival at the end of February which begins with the ceremonial tasting of the First Fruits by a local chief.
