Ostriches are fairly scarce in Kruger. In fact, these are the first ones we've seen close to home. In the breeding season, the males sit on the eggs at night & the females in the day. The females have brown plumage. The Lowveld is suffering a drought at present. I have have measured only 77mm, the normal to date being 280mm. There is virtually no new grass. Most species of Lowveld trees have deep tap roots & are able to access the subterranean water.
