To late
HAR!
Congrats, Dave!
In all honesty, from my recent personal experience, 55-300 is not the best
at this stage. Especially for the first 3-6 months of age, I was using
mostly Sigma 24/1.8. It was primarily for two reasons:
1. to avoid using the flash on the young eyes, and
2. to be able to take photos from a short distance (so that the child
wouldn't crawl away, and I can still catch her).
Then, it became a combination of 17-70/4 (with the flash), and first
35/2, and then 31/1.8 (without the flash).
Pentax 17-70/4 and 31/1.8 are still used the most, even though I like
50-135/2.8 when the space permits, typically outdoors.
So, maybe it's a good justification for Pentax 31/1.8? ;-)
