Three reasons:

1) the 2.8 is a stop and a half faster
2) the 2.8 has a better minimum focus
3) the 2.8 is smaller and lighter

All three of these are biggies for me.  I do realize that not everyone 
is interested in these particular benefits, and if you can live without 
'em, hell yes the 75mm f4.5 is a steal for $300.
