"Almost Heaven, West Makaha,
high ridge mountain, crystal clear blue waters.
All my friends there sitting on the beach,
young and old among them,
eating fish straight from the sea."

"IZ" Israel Kamakawiwo, "Country Roads"

In Maui we don't stay in a hotel or a resort complex, but in a condo
across the street from a public Beach Park. The park is a favorite of
locals, especially on weekends, when family parties are prevalent.
The extended family, or Ohana, is a deeply rooted Hawaiian
institution. Ohana is the most Hawaiian of all words in the Hawaiian
language, after Aloha.

These parties are attended by dozens of family members and friends,
and often incorporate "bouncy castles" and inflatable water slides, as
shown below, plus barbecues and volleyball, soccer or touch football
games (and, of course, swimming in the nearby ocean).
