Google Earth Pro, the version of Google Earth that used to cost $399/year, is now free. I've used the regular free Google Earth frequently to plan landscape shots, but the Pro version adds several additional features. Notably for photographers, it can simulate sunlight falling on the terrain at any time of day (there's a button with a sunset icon in the toolbar). This is probably most useful if you've lowered yourself near ground level.
