Jack,

Sorry, I am not overtly thrilled by this particular object, but I understand why it may have caught your sight. And I see why you wanted to make it B&W.
But I think the B&W conversation can be improved:
At least on my (recently calibrated) screen, the background in B&W version appears to be a bit too dark. I think the photo might benefit if before converting to B&W (whichever way you do), you'd reduce the brightness of the blue channel (the sky). This would work as a polarizer, and would help that "contraption" to stand out more.

After that I would also think about the deep shadow ares in the middle of the central "pole", and in the stick that goes from the center to about 7:30. I do not know what would work best: 1) to increase the overall contrast (to blow it somewhat out of proportion), in which case those shadows would be completely black or 2) fill them in.
It depends on what effect you prefer.

I suspect Ann may have done some of that (especially the first part) for you in her rendtion.

Igor

Spent some time dealing with B&W halos.

Am, also, including a full width color.

    Comments? I'll accept, "forget it!"
