Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading it. It is always interesting to
hear about other peoples experiences. Since I have the MZ5 it was
particularly interesting to hear about how well the MZ-S did in
comparison.
Yes, I too usually use manual focus in similar situations - finishing
lines or other critical spots in athletics and other sports. (The AF
often comes handy though in prefocusing or checking your focus point.)
Did you do this for fun and for free, or was it a paid assignment?
(Btw. Looking back at some shootings I've done, I in fact now regret
not having used flash in a few instances where I initially thought
that "natural" was better...)
Thanks,
Lasse

Lasse,
Being that I am one of the five people putting on this series, and we are
just into our third year, I am working the finish line for expenses. If I
were to step up and try to use flash and teh redundancy to ensure proper
shots then I feel I would have to begin charging for all my time. These are
informal shots that everyone gets and the word is getting out that we do
this. As the race increases and the costs do then I can see our entry fee
go up to cover my time as a photographer.
The other four people also give freely of their time to put these events on
and I am doing my part. We know that once we get things working well then we
can begin to charge for our time. And though the others are not
photographers, they do realize the skill and time involved and would not
deny me proper compensation.
Since we use a one-hour developer, not my photo store due to proximity to
the race site, we get the shots with no corrections in the printing to be
able to get them quicker. This forces me to be right on with exposures.
I was also fortunate that I did not have to contend with changing light in
terms of cloud cover. This is why flash photography would be so much
easier...
I also find myself every so often using the focus confirmation to ease my
mind that I am focussed properly.
Happy shooting,
Csar

P.S. My next big outing will be for the Gulf Coast Triathlon in May. There
I will not be doing finish line, but activity shots about the race site.
This is another event that I am one of the 11 board members and am giving of
my time and they pay expenses. This adds to the money we can give back to
the community.
