Most older lenses had a DOF scale printed on the barrel. The technique for use was to set one of the aperture markings to the infinity focus marker (usually the left hand aperture mark on all the lenses I can recall using), and then you would have acceptable DOF all the way to the opposing aperture mark. Of course, it depended on how the lens manufacturer determined acceptable! Biggest advantage is that it is always with you, no external devices, either battery powered or printed, needed and it relates only to the lens you are using.
