We have 4 magnolia trees in our yard. Two are more than 30 years old,
rather large and the traditional type that lose all their leaves in
the winter, then bloom profusely in the early spring, before the
leaves emerge. One is a smaller variety, that I planted two years
ago. It loses almost all of its leaves in the winter, but a few
survive in sheltered areas near the base. It also sets buds in early
spring, before the leaves return, but also has a few isolated blooms
that appear in late spring. The third is about 10 years old, and does
not lose its leaves in the winter, although they turn somewhat golden
underneath and brown along the edges. The leaves are quite shiny, as
seen in the below image. This magnolia does not bloom all at once in
early spring, but its blossoms appear in groups of two, three or four
throughout late spring and early summer, and then a few appear even in
the fall.
