i understood that the primary limit in pixel density on sensors has to do with the fact that as the photosites get smaller, there is more diffraction of the light hitting the sensor (through microlenses over each "pixel"), to the point where increasing pixel density will not resolve more detail, regardless of the lens.

Another problem is if the photo sites are narrower than the wavelength of the light they are intended to capture, but hey software can take care of that right?
