Seeing photos ice-encrusted lighthouses on Lake Michigan I'd say your winter 
storms are much more intense. Michigan is much larger than Ontario (the lakes, 
that is) so winds and waves must be much larger. For us on the north shore to 
have really big waves we need a southerly wind, and that doesn't happen so 
often - except that day...  :-)
