I can only speak from personal experience.  I've had maybe 30 items shipped here to
Canada, all from the US, over the past 2 years or so.  I've never had anything
damaged, and neither have I noticed that any of the packages have been opened by
customs, or anyone else.

Mind you, all of the packages have been small (lenses, cameras and cycling
jerseys), so maybe they didn't arouse any suspicions or curiosity at customs.
