It is something that I've never thought about before...
.. and I suspect that at least some people here might not have either...

Our fridge at home seemingly "died" earlier this week: it stopped cooling/freezing and started warming up.
We were figuring out if a repair was an option or we should be buying
another one (new? craigslist?...)
I will spare you from all the details of the saga.

The solution is simple: cleaning the coils. Our fridge is a side-by-side, and its coils are at the bottom. Some time ago, I did look at how dusty it was below the fridge, but I didn't realize that the coils were all in a very "furry" coat of dust deep inside that "crawl space"

Cleaning those solved the problem.
Apparently, they recommend cleaning those (for better efficiency) every 6-12 months. I know that the coils of this fridge haven't been cleaned for at least 6 years, but I suspect it may have been close to 15... ;-) I've collected more than 1, closer to 2 pounds (1kg) of dust from the coils.

And if you decide to clean the coils of your fridge, - here is a brush that costs just about $5:

And you would use it in a combination with a vacuum cleaner.

And you can see how it can be done, e.g. in this video:

PS. If someone finds the idea about regularly cleaning refrigerator coils as a news, please let me know, - I would be happy to know that spamming this list and writing all this was not a complete waste.
